Our Services and Equipment

Bucket-Auger Drilling

Alroy Drilling Services offers several types of bucket-auger rigs for geotechnical exploration in a variety of locations.  The EZ Bore, Earthdrill, and Mini Rig comprise a fleet of rigs that can tackle nearly every level of accessibility or geologic conditions.  A summary of each rig’s capabilities is provided below.  Technical specifications are provided in the table at the bottom of this page.  For specific questions not answered here, please contact us and we will be happy to accommodate your project specific needs.

EZ Bore

Alroy’s EZ Bore was built in 1981 by the EZ Bore Company to drill to 90 feet before stemming.  The rig was modified in the early 2000s to accommodate an extra bar on the Kelly to drill to 115 feet before stemming.  This modified EZ Bore can penetrate some of the more resistant bedrock formations found in southern California.  Bucket sizes for the EZ Bore range from 18-inch to 30-inch, with accompanying core bucket and the “Mad Max” auger for rocky conditions.  Sampling includes California Split-spoon samples driven by the Kelly Bar.  Downhole logging equipment includes swing or cage, light, two-way radio communication, safety harness and lanyard, and top-of-hole collar.

In 2008, the EZ Bore’s back engine was replaced with a new model permitted by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), giving Alroy the only known geotechnical bucket-auger rig permitted by this agency.

Earthdrill

Alroy’s Earthdrill was built in the 1960s to drill to 62 feet before stemming.  The rig currently is carried by a 1990 International truck, and has undergone significant upgrades in recent years.  The Earthdrill can penetrate most surficial and man-made soils, landslide debris, and soft to moderately dense bedrock formations at a rapid pace.  Designed for efficiency, this rig has available bucket sizes ranging from 18-inch to 30-inch, including core buckets and a bailing bucket for heavy seepage or shallow groundwater conditions.  Sampling includes California Split-spoon samples driven by the Kelly bar and a 140-pound hammer to obtain Standard Penetration Test (SPT) values and samples.  Downhole logging equipment includes swing or cage, light, two-way radio communication, safety harness and lanyard, and top-of-hole collar.

Mini Rig

Alroy’s Mini Rig was built in the 1980s and designed by Alroy’s own Dennis and Tom Seabold to provide bucket-auger drilling services in limited-access environments such as residential yards, commercial areas, and building interiors.  The Mini Rig is mounted on a rubber-tired frame designed to fit through side yard gates and building doorways, and is delivered to the site on a 1984 Isuzu truck.  The Mini Rig operates hydraulically using the truck’s engine, and therefore does not produce exhaust at the drilling location, making it ideal for interior exploration.  In addition, the Mini Rig has two derricks to accommodate both indoor and outdoor use.  The Mini Rig can drill to about 40 feet before stemming, and is designed to penetrate surficial and man-made soils, landslide debris, and soft to moderately dense bedrock formations efficiently.  Bucket sizes for the Mini Rig range from 16-inch to 24-inch including core buckets for some diameters.  Sampling includes California Split-spoon samples driven by the Kelly Bar.  Downhole logging equipment includes swing or cage, light, two-way radio communication, safety harness and lanyard, and top-of-hole collar.
